Celtic Mythology, Ritual and Jungian Therapy
Sylvia Brinton Perera is a Jungian analyst who lives, practices, teaches, and writes in New York and Vermont. Originally trained as an art historian, she turned to psychology after working with disadvantaged children during the sixties. Earning her M.A. in psychology and graduating from the C.G. Jung Institute in New York, she worked in a city hospital and then at a university counseling center before opening her private practice. She now lectures internationally and has written several publications and books (titles available on our website).
Lecture: Friday June 4th, 2010, 7:30pm
Workshop: Saturday 5th June 2010, from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Both events will be held at Parkdale United Church, 2919 8th Avenue N.W., Calgary
Friday: The Ritual Bridge from Concrete Action to Spiritual Communion
Carl Jung saw psychotherapy as an essential, Western initiatory rite and depth analysis as the psychological equivalent to the alchemical making of gold. Sylvia Perera, M.A. will present stories from the analytic work of several clients that reveal the processes through which they moved and were moved by concrete actions into the depths of psyche. The created rites become a bridge to the sacred and a source of personal transformation.
Saturday: Rites of the Celtic Wellsprings
In Ireland and Wales many rituals of the ancient cult of sacred waters survived into modern times and still have relevance for contemporary Jungian therapy. The holy wells have long been seen as sources of fertility, regeneration, deepened and expanded vision, sovereignty initiations, and healing. Some of the rituals are similar to the Christian Eucharist, which Jung termed "the rite of individuation."
Using lecture, discussion, guided imagination, and personal journal writing, we will each make our own imaginal journey to the wellspring to explore how the nine-fold stages of the healing rites can attune us to the source and help us to transform our relationships to our complexes.
For this workshop bring your memories, a notebook for journaling, and a pebble. Drawing materials will be supplied.
Attendance at the workshop is limited to 50 people.
