Next Event: Money Makes the World Go Around – or Does It?

Zeljko Matijevic, Judith Slimmon & Mae Stolte:

Lecture: Friday 25th September 2009, 7:30pm

Parkdale United Church (Auditorium)

2919 8th Avenue NW, Calgary

A panel of our Calgary analysts will explore a topic that dominates our news today - the complex relationship we have with money.   Through three short lectures the analysts will present a brief overview of the origins of money and its evolution from a means of exchange, to a sign and to a symbol, with its attendant myriad of meanings.   Then the idea of a “free lunch” will be explored, including the meaning of such phenomenon as hyperbole advertising, gambling and endless credit  and their role in the individuation process.   Finally our notions of debt and what it means to “pay back” or “forgive” a debt will be examined in both a practical and symbolic sense.   These presentations will be followed by an extensive group discussion.
