April 19th, 2002

THE ROSE: IMAGE AND SYMBOL

Symbol in analytical psychology has to do with the mysterious capacity of the psyche (mind) to attach psychic energy to an image - far more energy than we can comprehend. The symbol then "carries" us in some way. When we have an experience of the symbol. We can never know all meanings attendant in the symbol. But, we can use our functions of consciousness to explore the symbol and thus discover various aspects of an archetypal energy that has chosen to manifest iself in an image that "grab" us with passion. The rose is a symbol for me. 1 will draw from the rich resources of historical highlights, etymology and other dictionaries, botanical information, mythology, legends and storm, as well as, alchemy, Rose Windows and Courtly Love to explore the symbolism of the rose.
