Lecture: The Villa of Mysteries: The Significance of Dionysian Initiation Then and Now
The frescos preserved on the walls of the Initiation Chamber in the Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii, Italy, portray an ancient religious rite. A secret Dionysian cult was believed to have been practiced in this setting from 34BC to 14 AD. The frescoes illustrate the stages of the initiation process. In this lecture, many slides will be viewed in order to examine the images for their religious and symbolic meaning, as well as the psychological significance it held for the initiates. Special attention will be given to the relevance such initiation rites have for our psychological transformations today. Information about the myths of Dionysus and Ariadne will also be discussed.
