Panel Discussion: Opening to the Symbol
A panel discussion with Calgary Analysts Dr. Zeljko Matijevic, Judith Slimmon, and Mae Stolte
Opening to the Symbol: Living the Symbolic Life
The world is too much with us; late and soon, Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers; Little we see in nature that is ours; We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
Wordsworth wrote these lines more than 200 years ago, but they have never been more true than in our contemporary culture.
The bottom line –efficiency, provability goal focused orientation.
Do these words ring just a little hollow in the place that we once referred to as the soul? Symbolic life provides a conscious means to return to the language of the soul and a powerful antidote to our goal driven materialism. It leads us down into the mystery that resides in our own depths and provides unfolding meaning that enriches and nurtures life, even in the face of suffering. In this panel we will begin with the basics. What is a symbol? Where does it come from? What do we do with it? From here we will explore the emergence of the collective symbols in our cultural history, as exemplified in rituals, myths and fairy tales. Finally, we will look at the symbol when it makes its woefully ignored presence known in the form of a symptom. Join us following the panel discussion for a lively discussion as we try to find ways to develop a symbolic attitude and live more fully, more symbolically.
