The film American Beauty: A Study of Addiction
Dr. Wilkes will explore and illustrate the predicaments of addiction in contemporary society as illustrated by the movie, American Beauty. Scientific materials in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have resulted in a crisis in the religious symbolism of the wafer and the wine. This has been replaced by a ruinous relationship some have with drugs, food, drink, sex and violence. The erosion of the sacred symbolic life has led many into an experience of chaos, loneliness, fear and alienation. (Clips of the movie will not be shown. Previewing this film is recommended.)
