The Fairy Tale “The Goose Girl”: The Archetypal Feminine and its Shadow

We have all encountered difficulties along the path of life: leaving home, learning to live as an adult, remaining true to one’s Self, to one’s own values no matter how desperate things become. Meet the character of the feminine and follow its development in relation to otherness in “The Goose Girl”.

Everyone has a personal shadow, which begins to develop in childhood as a result of stuffing away “negative” feelings in order to build a “proper” ego. The shadow is everything; truths and values, that have been rejected, devalued, and denied because they do not fit into the ego ideal or our collective ideal. Meet the hidden power of the shadow side of human nature through “The Goose Girl” fairy tale.

“The Goose Girl” is a tale about leaving home, mother-daughter ties, living with a secret and the shadow, about growing up after leaving home. It is a tale of betrayal, secret, oath, pretence, deception, and transformation. It is a tale for women and men about learning to be related and true to one’s Self. “The Goose Girl” fairytale will be used to illustrate the archetypal dynamics of individuation—with particular attention to:

  • The development of the feminine
  • Becoming acquainted with shadow through life’s journey
  • Transformational processes
