Gender, Archetype and Patriarchy
Ahhh, the age-old question, “What do women really want?” This is a question aptly asked again and again, with each generation, as the authentic feminine principle continues its struggle to find expression through the ego of women and the anima of men in a culture overlaid with thousands of years of patriarchal history.
Long before Sigmund Freud ironically asked the question, “What do women really want?”, this query was addressed in a legend entitled, “Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady”, from the Arthurian romances, documented as early as the 12th century in France. Using this legend and other myths, stories and images, the lecture will differentiate between stereotypical, gender-based “feminine” and “masculine” ideas and images, and archetypal feminine principles and its opposite, archetypal masculine principles. With a clearer notion of what masculine and feminine principles look like, we will consider individual and collective life, seeking to recover the genuine feminine voice that is vital in our human journey toward wholeness.
