Carl Jung is well known for pioneering the investigation of development in the second half of life. What is less well known is that Jung had a theory of development that covered the entire life span. This lecture will give an overview of Jung’s theories and compare these to what is known today about life stage development. Topics covered include:
- Historical context of Jung’s developmental theories
- What is known “empirically” - well-known analytic theories of development
- Jung’s worldview
- The three parts to Jung’s developmental theory – ego, individual, and the world

Workshop: The Mechanisms of Individuation
Saturday, October 25, 2008 @ 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
University of Calgary, Science Theatre 130
This full day workshop will focus on the processes and psychological mechanisms Jung identified to be involved in Individuation. Topics covered include:
- Review of the concepts of libido, ego, self, individual, individuation, collectivity, and adaptation
- Discussion of quotes from Jung regarding the mechanisms of individuation: splitting, projection, compensation, complementarity, enantiodromia, and transcendent function
- Illustration of principles through dream series
- Clinical implications of these mechanisms for therapists and techniques in therapy

A native Canadian, Dr. Evers studied nursing in the USA and received her MSN at Yale University with a specialty as a Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner. She spent 21 years in Switzerland, studying at the CJ Jung Institute in Zurich, and later became training and supervising analyst at the ISAP Zurich training institute. She obtained her PhD at the University of Essex Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies; her dissertation was entitled “The Ego Concept in the Works of CG Jung”. She also taught Advanced Nursing Practice while in Switzerland at the University of Basel. She has returned to Canada to continue her analytical work as well as her teaching and supervisory activities in Victoria, BC.
